How Slowing Down Can Unlock Your Startup’s Next Big Conversation

What Happens When Founders Breathe First, Then Speak?

In our high-pressure, hyper-communicative startup world—where pitching, hiring, negotiating, and building happen all at once—it’s easy to overlook a key factor in performance: how we speak, listen, and connect under pressure.

That’s why Angel Club’s Founder Flow series isn’t your typical Zoom workshop. It’s not just about getting things done—it’s about getting centered, aligned, and clear, so that you can communicate powerfully in every conversation that matters.

In our May session of Founder Flow: Peak Performance Coaching, hosted by Angel Club founder Angel Gambino, we were joined by Tarin Calmeyer, founder of Remote Team Wellness, and special guest Ben Kromnick, Angel Club Mentor, Mercury Head of Healthcare & Life Sciences, and LvlUp Ventures Venture Partner for a guided, practical session on mindful communication—how to speak with clarity, presence, and power, especially in high-stakes conversations with co-founders, investors, and team members.

The room filled quickly with entrepreneurs, angel investors, and startup operators eager to pause, reset, and reconnect with their communication habits. As Angel put it:

“If we’re all coming to conversations like this, then the whole world gets better, not just our startups.”

Why This Session Hit Home

The theme of the session—Mindful Communication—was not just timely, but deeply relevant to the founder experience. As Tarin opened the session:

“Most people don’t listen to understand. They listen to respond.”

Whether you’re raising your first round of venture capital or navigating a tough conversation with your CTO, your state of being impacts every decision. Nervous system overload, emotional reactivity, and unclear asks often get in the way of our best intentions.

This session was about shifting that pattern.

From Meditation to Muscle Memory: What We Practiced

Led by Tarin, participants were guided through breathwork, presence exercises, and body awareness practices specifically tailored to founders under pressure. These weren’t abstract ideas—they were real-time resets you could apply before your next pitch, stand-up, or investor call.

“Even two minutes of connection can change how we relate to ourselves and to others.”

—Tarin Calmeyer

Tarin introduced several core principles:

🟡 The 4 P’s of Clear Communication:

  1. Presence – Feel your feet on the ground, take three breaths, be where your feet are.

  2. Perspective – Give context and clarity, especially when making a request.

  3. Precision – Speak simply and directly—no filler, no fluff.

  4. Proposal – Make a clear, actionable ask rather than an assumption.

This wasn’t just theory. Founders took time during the session to write out one conversation they’d been avoiding—then reframed it using the 4 P’s.

Real Founder Voices, Real Takeaways

Angel Club member and mentor lead Jon-David Hague shared what drew him to the community:

“As a new founder, I found a lot of things mysterious… formation docs, traction, banking. The mentorship here helped me navigate all of it—and produce these sessions for others.”

Jon-David’s story resonated with many in the room—founders juggling product, pitching, and personal life, often without a playbook. Angel Club’s approach helps remove that mystery with structure, mentorship, and connection.

Ben Kromnick, Head of Healthcare & Life Sciences at Mercury and long-time Angel Club mentor, brought a powerful testimonial:

“I got really into transcendental meditation in my early 20s… and I forgot that there’s more than three breaths. This session helped me reconnect with that longer practice.”

Ben’s honesty struck a chord. Founders in the Zoom chat resonated with the idea that speed isn’t always strength. Slowing down can become a strategic edge, especially in fundraising and investor relationships.

Key Insights for Founders, VCs, and Startup Teams

Clarity is kind – Founders often speak in shorthand, especially under pressure. But clarity (not speed) is what builds trust with co-investors, VCs, and your team.

Your nervous system is in every pitch – If you’re not grounded, it shows in your tone, your ask, and your response. Calm is contagious—but so is chaos.

Validation ≠ Agreement – You can acknowledge someone’s view without agreeing. “I hear you, that makes sense from your perspective” is often all it takes to move a conversation forward.

Don’t make assumptions—make the ask – Mindful founders don’t guess what others need. They get specific: “Here’s what I’m seeing. Here’s what I’d like to explore. Are you open to that?”

What Founders Said About the Session

Anita Antony, from Angel Club’s membership team, joined for the first time and shared this reflection:

“As founders and investors, we’re always on the go. This helped me realize I need to slow down, be present, and regulate my system more often. I used to meditate regularly, and this made me want to start again.”

Another founder messaged privately:

“I didn’t know how much tension I was holding until I stopped. This gave me tools I can use next time I talk to my co-founder.”

Beyond the Zoom Room: Why Founder Flow Matters

Angel closed the session with a powerful reminder:

“We open these sessions to the broader startup community because we believe this work makes everything better—not just your pitch deck or your traction metrics, but your relationships, your clarity, your energy.”

Each Founder Flow session is part of Angel Club’s deeper commitment to coaching, wellness, fundraising support, and mentorship.
